Southwest Career and Technical Academy , Las Vegas, Nevada

As a little girl, I dreamed of becoming a princess. Fitted in a gorgeous gown, I longed to glide down the ballroom floor with my dress flowing behind me. I patiently awaited the day it would become a reality: my eighteenth birthday. There is nothing grander than a Filipina’s eighteenth birthday, a debut, where friends and family come together to celebrate a girl’s transition into adulthood. An enchanting night of dancing and laughter it would be everything a little girl could wish for. Yet, as the years passed and the day finally came, I realized it would not be the expected celebration.

Gazing into the mirror, I mustered a smile. I adjusted the folds of the simple pink dress I bought a few days prior, trying to swallow the hard truth: this would not be the celebration of my dreams. The burden of extravagant expenses weighed heavily upon my mind, so an intimate gathering was what I willingly settled on to spare my parents the financial strain. It was that thought that helped me stifle any trace of regret as we arrived at the quaint Italian restaurant. With a special reservation, we were led to a private room, where the noise of the patrons quieted. In the silence, my mouth fell ajar. It was not the large venue I had once hoped for, but the small space awoke a magical feeling inside me. The plain walls were transformed into ancient Roman architecture, golden balloons were decorated, and each table was arranged neatly. It felt like a palace of my own. Awestruck, I settled alongside the guests who occupied the rest of the seats. Once the room was filled with the clinking of utensils, I let my eyes wander the scene—suddenly, something inside me felt settled.

Entranced with the beauty of the place, my eyes landed on the people who came to share my celebration. Fond memories flooded my mind as I looked around; I felt a fresh feeling of gratitude with each person. My eyes fluttered to Sahar, whose headstrong resilience showed me perseverance from a young age. To my right, I smile at Jonathan, whose simple honesty made me believe in the power of genuine connection. I turned to my mother, my greatest mentor and confidant, who taught me to value the beauty of each day. The dream of that magnificent celebration no longer felt necessary. When the time came to blow out my candles, my heart swelled inside my chest, and I was surrounded by the people who touched my soul. I couldn’t help but wonder—how could I ever ask for more?

As the flame of the candles extinguished, my disappointment disappeared with the smoke. There were no ball gowns nor choreographed dances—which was a relief because I have two left feet. There were no big, emotional speeches—just chatter and laughter. Perfection encompassed the room calmly and steadily, taking me into the next chapter of my life with all the support I needed. I realized that the true essence of celebration did not come from grandiosity but from the company of my loved ones. The swirl of heaviness and regret seemed to become a warmth of exhilaration—a gentle farewell to the past and a welcome hello to the future filled with love.

The little girl with big dreams received everything she wanted without a debut; surrounded by the admiration and well-wishes of my loved ones, I couldn’t have felt more like a princess. In a celebration that was not traditionally Filipino nor American, I found that everything I needed came from the connections I cherished. With their lessons imparted, I was ready to navigate adulthood—a more precious gift than any grand celebration. It was my special day, though not exactly what I had in mind initially, but it was uniquely mine: a Filipino-American birthday.
