Salem High School, Virginia

On December 7th, 2013 my grandpa had an aneurysm that almost killed him. It changed his life and my family’s lives forever. The beginning of that day started like any regular day: I went to school. I was in fourth grade, and I was sitting in the cafeteria with my cousins waiting to get picked up by my mom like we always did, but my aunt picked us up instead which was weird because my mom always picked me up. I was kind of shocked. I got in the car and my aunt looked really sad, but she wouldn't tell me why she was so sad. I was kind of freaking out. I am an over-thinker anyways, but I was really, really anxious. I got home and all of my family on my mom's side was sitting in our living room crying and that freaked me out even more. I didn't know what happened and they told my cousins and me that our grandfather had had an aneurysm and that he was in the hospital and that he was in surgery at that point in time. We didn't know if he was going to make it so we all went to the hospital to wait in the waiting room for hours and then at about 8 at night a nurse came out and said that the surgery was a success. I was extremely happy, but I was still absolutely shocked. I never expected anything like that to happen.

It was just crazy, but then later the nurses said that while they were taking him in the ambulance he had no pulse at all, but he was walking around and talking to the nurses and telling them what was hurting him and what all had happened. All of that is almost impossible. Like how could someone be functioning without a heartbeat? He has no recollection of any of it. I think back on it and I just realize how lucky he is and it's just crazy that he walked out of that alive. It’s truly a miracle that he is still with us today. It wasn’t his time to go yet. But what’s even crazier is how he is almost a different person now. He has changed so much since then in a good way. Before that he'd always been very distant from all of us and all our family and he would show up on holidays and our birthdays and stuff but he would never really show up any other time. But now he is a part of our lives a lot. He's always around and he's always doing stuff with us. He’s always texting back and forth with me calling me. He’s always at my basketball and baseball games. It is truly unbelievable still to this day. It just goes to show how a person can change and how you can't ever take things for granted cause you never know when it's going to end. That day had started just like every regular day, but Lord was it ever not a regular day. That day makes me sad, but it also makes me happy. The Bible talks about how everything happens for a reason, and even though in the moment it seemed like everything was going wrong, it ended up working out just how God planned it to.
