Marcus

Granger High School, Granger, Washington

Once I was lost, but then I discovered who I truly wanted to become. Growing up with pain and curiosity about my future led me on a path of discovering who I am. Unfortunately, during my sophomore year of high school, my mom was diagnosed with both breast and skin cancer, I could not fathom the news that was brought to my attention. This new reality was very difficult for me to handle, I had to face the fact that I could lose my mom from a sickness you only see on television. My mom meant the world to me and she became my motivation to be successful. As a kid, I was drawn to computer software and technology, a long-lasting interest in experiencing the infinite content of limitless possibilities they offered. Yet, I was worried about how my future would turn out, I was stuck on how I would further progress in my field and resolved to keep my feelings to myself, never mentioning both situations to anyone. Despite the challenge thrown at me, I discovered the power to control my own future.

These circumstances, coupled with the difficulty in finding my passion, left me feeling uncertain and unsure about my future. The difficulty of learning about my mom’s sickness getting worse led me into a painful spiral of emotions. However, by not focusing on my academics, I risk performing poorly in my classes that were important for my future.

Sadly, my mom passed away on the 23rd of November, in the early months of my junior year. This left me broken from a loss of motivation and absences from my education. Despite this, I want to proceed full force in creating endless possibilities with the determination that remains within me. With the support of my mom and the love of my family, I am now inspired to make an impact on the world by utilizing my knowledge and skills with computers. Instead of allowing these circumstances to define me, I have tested myself by stepping up and striving for success in my academic pursuits. Through the influences of my counselor and my teachers, my mindset changed to focus on opportunities that allow me to make an impact. The experience of my projects will lead me into preparing for the real world in my chosen major, computer science.

I will be a first-generation college student, who endured difficult trials in my lifetime. I am eager to take meaningful steps towards a positive change. I am determined to pursue my dream of majoring in computer science and become a game developer to enlighten and inspire others. Despite the hardships of losing my mother, the people who helped me in these troubling times encouraged me to push myself beyond my limits to succeed in my education. I have pursued rigorous classes that would push me to grow and develop my skills. I know that the key to success is making efforts towards a goal, and attending a university is one that is particularly important to me. My plan is to make the most of my life and go even further beyond my expectations in order to show my warrior mother what her son will achieve. I am a student who overcame traumatic difficulties and pushed through with commitment to succeed in my dreams with the help and support of my loving mom.
